Fraym and NoMAP Complete Geospatial Analysis of Off-Grid Communities in 10 States
As part of efforts to provide market intelligence to market actors in the off-grid energy space, Nigeria Off-Grid Market Acceleration Program (NOMAP), an independent market-building entity, has announced the completion of its data gathering engagement with Fraym, a consumer data company. Fraym was engaged in October 2018 by the Off-Grid energy market accelerator, to undertake geospatial analysis across 10 states in Nigeria. The exercise had two goals. First, to identify commercially viable off-grid communities suitable for mini-grid development and solar home systems deployment. Second, to make the information available to both government and access to energy companies.
The states analysed include Abia, Anambra, Bauchi, Edo, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Oyo states. Fraym leveraged its proprietary machine learning techniques and high-resolution satellite imagery to provide insights such as distance from the grid, history of violence, level of productive activities, presence of anchor customers, willingness and ability to pay, and other important socio-economic indicators. Fraym subsequently delivered a long list of communities viable for both mini-grids and solar home systems across the focus states.
NOMAP will validate the output of Fraym’s analysis by collecting community-level data in about 150 communities across the surveyed states using field enumerators. The final information gathered will be domiciled with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA). It would be recalled that NOMAP supported the REA in conducting market energy audits as part of its Energizing Economies Initiatives especially in markets in Kaduna state.
